Heidelberg is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. As of 2008, over 145,000 people live within the city's 109 square kilometres (42 sq mi) area. Heidelberg is a unitary authority. The Rhein-Neckar-Kreis rural district surrounds and has its seat in the city, but the city is not a part of the district.
Heidelberg lies on the river Neckar at the point where it leaves its narrow, steep valley in the Odenwald to flow into the Rhine valley. 20 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Heidelberg, it joins the river Rhine at Mannheim. Heidelberg is part of a densely populated region known as the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region.
Alte Brucke or Old Bridge in English: The Karl-Theodor Bridge, better known as the Old Bridge is a bridge over the Neckar in Heidelberg . Sie verbindet die Altstadt mit dem gegenüberliegenden Neckarufer am östlichen Ende des Stadtteils Neuenheim . It combines the old with the opposite bank of the river at the eastern end of the quarter Neuenheim . Die Alte Brücke aus Neckartäler Sandstein wurde 1788 unter Kurfürst Karl Theodor als insgesamt neunte Brücke an dieser Stelle errichtet. The old bridge of the Neckar valley sandstone in 1788 under Elector Karl Theodor Bridge ninth overall at this point as established. Heute gehört sie zu den bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten Heidelbergs. Today it is one of the most famous sights of Heidelberg.
Elisabethentor was built by Friedrich V for his wife, Elizabeth Stuart shows, in contrast to the English construction already very developed forms of the early Baroque. Rathaus or the Town Hall is a historic building in the old town of Heidelberg. After the initial town hall following the devastation of the Thirty Years War had to be demolished, was in the same place in the years 1701-1703 a new building in the style of the Baroque built. From this first period of the town hall also provided the masks and the electoral emblem of Hungarian sculptor Henry Charrasky on the front facade. Charraskys work is also the home to the giant visible. The City Council has undergone several alterations and extensions hereafter. The north wing was built 1886-1890. The built in from the left side of the main tower facade, however, was later removed and integrated into the lower floors of the tower in the façade. The last cultivation experienced the Town Hall in 1961, when the bell tower was located on the east facade.
